Roswell Roots Poetry Slam Competition

Hosted by Ashlee Haze, the evening will feature a spotlight showcase by poet and slam champion Adan Bean and 3-rounds of poetry competition featuring local poets.

The City of Roswell is pleased to announce the return of the once landmark event, the Roswell Roots Poetry Slam Competition. The top 4 winners will receive cash prizes, with a grand prize of $1000 for the 1st place winner.

Five judges will be chosen randomly from the audience on the evening of the event. This is an all ages event, but you must be 18 to compete.

Rules

12 poets will compete in up to 3 rounds of poetry in an effort to win the title.

Up to 6 slots will be reserved for poets who have historically competed in the slam on an invitational basis. 6 slots will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The list opens when doors open the night of the event.

Poets will draw numbers randomly prior to round 1. Any poet not present for the draw will not be eligible to slam. The draw will take place at 7:15 pm.

This slam has a time limit of 3-minutes with a 10-second grace period.
.5 points will be deducted for every 10-seconds past the grace period.
Poets who perform a poem that exceeds 4 minutes will be disqualified.
All work must be original work. Any sampling must not exceed 30 seconds of the entire work.
No costumes or props. Just you, a microphone, and your paper/medium you’re reading the poem from.

Judges

5 judges will be chosen randomly from the audience on the evening of the event. Judges will score each poem on a scale of 1-10, with 1 decimal point allowed. The highest and lowest scores will be dropped, and the remaining 3 scores added for a maximum poem score of 30.

Roswell Roots is a community-wide, month-long festival that honors our diverse community and celebrates Black History Month. Roswell Roots aims to educate, impact, and promote cultural awareness. Programs and events focus on welcoming all community members and offer an opportunity for all ages to engage and participate.

Parking is available for Roswell Cultural Arts Center events in the parking lot beside the arts center and across the footbridge in Lower Lot F at City Hall.
